What is going on???
Hey Friends
Writing this week's newsletter back in my home base on a nice Friday morning. Picked up a tasty latte from this place called Coffee Coffee too for myself and my girl since it's her birthday. Prob gonna keep today's workload light and bust this newsletter out + Finish up a little personal piece I was working on yesterday.
Adobe my friend, WTF??
So if you haven't heard our good friends over at adobe who are notorious for overcharging and monopolizing are now charging for the use of PANTONE COLORS. I mean what kinda capitalistic hell do we have to be living in for a company to charge for COLORS?
This is super inconvenient for designers, especially those who work in-house or within the print space a lot. If you have never worked on any packaging design or other printed materials, Pantone is essential to making sure the colors you are using on the screen look accurate and not like shit when they are in the physical world.
When I worked at AOS we lived and died by the Pantone swatches, I even had one of those overpriced little pantone swatch things that they want you to buy every 9-12 months.
This situation isn't just frustrating for adobe users and Pantone peeps, but I b believe it sets a precedence for companies like Adobe to keep piecing out essential features and charging more for them.
Literally sometime this year, BMW was talking about charging $15 a month or something like that to USE THE HEATED SEATS like WHAT??
IDK I don't think I am overreacting when I say these companies do not have the best interests in mind for the user, it's all about that dollar.
I hope this doesn't start to creep over into other stuff, I don't wanna start paying $20 a month to use blending modes in photoshop.
Creative Block
I think I wrote about a little dry spell I have been going through in a recent newsletter. I also ranted about that and creative block in a recent podcast, you can check that out HERE. Anyway when that dry spell hit it inspired me to dive deep into some more personal work.
The problem is I was running into some creative block or resistance if you will. I love creating personal design work or "art" I guess for lack of a better word but the thing about it is sometimes when there is no copy, brief, restrictions, or any parameters that is at times harder than strict guidelines.
When the possibilities are infinite they also come off in your brain as ZERO. I'm happy to have been working on my Blues Legends series but other than that ideas have been a little slim.
I asked you all on IG what are some things you do to combat creative block and wanted to share the best ones!
CREATIVE BLOCK REMEDIES
be fully bored and sit in the sun
Poetry (read or write it)
Going to record stores, libraries, etc
Finding an old piece and seeing how you would approach it differently
Keep a Whats app or notes app of ideas when they randomly come to you.
Take a few days off
Feel free to reply too if you have any good ideas on this subject.
Continuously manifesting a mini truck
Fun Datsun inspired vintage ad I created today. "BUT WHAT ABOUT THE CREATIVE BLOCK" Well it turns out I had a spark of inspiration while starting this newsletter and knew I had to act on it. I also didn't wanna delete out that whole section lol.
Stuff I currently like and stuff I'm looking forward to!
