Sharing the Sugar
Hey Friends
Been working on some exciting client work this week and hope the month of April has been treating y'all well!
Analog Work(s)
As you may have seen on my Instagram or Twitter I have been experimenting with a lot more analog techniques over the past year. everything from collage to texturing my posters with an old nail file. This stuff is mostly for fun and hasn't crept its way into much of my client work yet... until recently. I am working on a fun project currently that I can hopefully show y'all in the next month and the client requested analog posters and collage! This has been such a validating and fun experience so far because it shows that the fun experimental stuff can get you paid. I think this has been a perfect example of how when you put out the type of work you want to be doing in the world eventually it will come to fruition on the client side. Don't be afraid to experiment and pursue the fun styles that make you happy.
Sharing the Sugar
I recorded a podcast with my good design friend Harry Vincent recently. We got to chatting about how the design community seems to never learn from its problems and even with all these resources we have young designers still face the same existential crises that we did. He has some big plans to solve some of this and I can hopefully be involved in this design avengers escapade. For now, though it got me thinking about how I can give some quick actionable help to y'all. below are some resources I hope can help young creatives either learn more on the business side or just get some creative inspo. Lastly submit to Harrys google form if there is stuff you wish you knew when starting out.
Good Creative Shit
There is so much more too and I'll try to send more stuff over the coming weeks!
Win Without Pitching
I have been reading this cool book called the Win Without Pitching Manifesto. It has a bunch of cool insights on securing clients and being respected as a creative. One of the chapters that really stood out to me was about not doing work before we get paid or giving preliminary presentations. As designers, we give away so much valuable knowledge for free when trying to prove ourselves to the client. If the client actually wants to hire us though we shouldn't have to do that work until the money is sorted out. Mechanics get paid to diagnose your car, doctors get paid for check-ups and lawyers get paid for the consultation. Think about yourself as a professional and make sure your value is being respected.
Stuff I currently like and stuff I'm looking forward to!
