Stop worrying about what you think the algorithm wants. Focus instead on creating what you’re passionate about and what you actually enjoy.
When you put out work that you 100% enjoyed making and work that had no expectation of performance on social media. It seems to have an energy that feels more authentic and impactful.
Let’s be real: even though many designers and visual artists have grown frustrated with Instagram, it’s still the main platform for posting visual art.
I still struggle with the balance of doing what i want vs. what will “pop off”. It’s easy to get caught up in trying to post videos or designs in the tallest possible format to maximize engagement, or make something into a video for no reason lol.
Yes, we want to create what we love. But if no one sees it, it doesn’t meet our goals of sharing our art, reaching new people, or attracting clients.
A few weeks ago, I posted a series of typographic postcards inspired by my time in Switzerland. Typographic work is something I love as a designer, yet it often doesn’t perform well on Instagram
Also, the “Instagram gurus” say not to post in landscape orientation because it occupies the smallest amount of space on feeds. But I did it anyway—I stayed true to the design I envisioned.
To my surprise, this series became one of my best-performing posts of 2024 in terms of likes, comments, shares, and engagement.
And the best part? I didn’t compromise my artistic integrity.
I created it exactly how I wanted and put it out there for those who appreciate this type of design.
This isn’t to say that every piece you make with pure artistic intent will perform well on social media. But it’s taught me to worry less about optimizing for mass reach and Instead, start focusing more on quality.
Sometimes that beautiful intersection meets where a good quality piece of design gets to be seen by the most quantity of people.
So moving forward, I'm going to keep doing my thing and try my best not worry about what Mark Zuckerberg thinks people should see and keep showing people what I want to show them.
Have a great rest of your week, y'all.
