Hey Friends
I hope you all are doing well this week. Today I wanted to bring you another list of my favorite things in a certain category, but I couldn’t quite narrow it down.
So I thought.. Fuck it, here are 10 of my fav things lately from random different walks of life.
001. Favorite Album
Lately, I have been back on this all-time classic hardcore banger by the Gorilla Biscuits.
They were such pioneers in sound and style. In my opinion, they were the best early hardcore and out of this era with an honorable mention to Minor Threat.
If you haven’t heard this album I highly suggest checking it out and I think it can be enjoyed by anyone really, even if you haven’t listened to hardcore or punk music.
My favorite track on this bad boy is probably “Forgotten”
002. Favorite Recent Purchase
I hate to promote Amazon but I have to say my fav recent purchase has been my Kindle.
This thing is so dope and I love how lightweight it is. I always thought I would hate the idea of introducing another piece of technology into my life but damn was I wrong.
I have read more than ever since I bought this thing and am stoked to take it on my upcoming flight to Europe
Hit me with some book recommendations!
003. Favorite Designer
So many people tho choose for this, but my favorite designer lately is James Ronkoo
His work combines beautiful sporadic layouts, insane texture and spot-on typography.
004. Favorite Font
Honestly, I think lately it would have to be Alte Haas Grotesk.
I got put onto this sleeper gym a few years back by Roy Cranston in a podcast I did with him.
It is basically just a pre roughened version of Neue Haas Grotesk and it gives the original typeface a more organic feel.
Honorable mention to Kabel Black!
005. Favorite YouTube Video
Shoutout to the goat at explaining things to me with nice visuals: Phil Edwards.
Phill posts educational videos that are equally informative and entertaining. I never thought I would care about BBQ but this video was amazing.
He breaks down all the different types of BBQ and how the people + the region they are from influence the flavor, style, and culture.
006. Favorite Design From the “Wild”
Erika brought me home this insane sandwich bag from a local deli around my house.
I love finding good designs like this hidden at the most random small businesses.
I love the colors, the characters and it’s just overall so fun.
This is exactly how I want my local deli to be branded, not looking like a minimalist software company or some shit
BRING BACK FUN DESIGN
007. Favorite TV Show
I am going back to arguably one of my favorite shows of all time Malcolm in the Middle
Hal is the best TV show character ever created. My partner Erika had never seen most of the episodes so we are on a binge of this show at the moment.
I can’t believe Bryan Cranston played both Hal and Walter White. 2 of the best shows in history and such contrasting types of roles, dude is the goat.
If for some reason you have never seen this show, def go watch it. The storylines for each episode are amazing and it always has me cracking up/
008. Favorite Coffee
I been digging this amazing single origin from Slow Bloom Coffee.
They also killed it on the packaging design.
GOOD COFFEE & GOOD DESIGN
They are also a 100% worker-owned CO-OP soi am def down to support small businesses like that whenever I can!
009. Favorite Hobby
The best activity I have done outside of design this past year by far has been rock climbing.
I specifically love bouldering and have been going at least twice a week for a good 6-8 months now.
As someone who works primarily at a desk all day, it has been super important for me to get my body moving outside of work.
I love that climbing is physically challenging but also mentally, makes for a lot more fun experience compared to other forms of working out like lifting or running.
I am honestly a walking graphic design meme at this point: Graphic designer who wears Carhartt and goes rock climbing… lol
010. Favorite Website
I am working on a movie poster design for a client indie film at the moment and have been loving this website for inspiration.
It’s called Film Art Gallery
They have a ton of old movie posters for sale but I have just been using it as an amazing source of vintage inspiration.
def go check it out and special mention to the Polish posters.
That’s all I got for ya.
Talk soon!
