Make Art Not Content
Hey Friends
This week has been pretty refreshing, recorded a nice little podcast with Foiegraphics and got my shit done. Some weeks you just plan everything out and it actually works lol. I hope you all got what you were after this past week and if not keep at it.

Is Fan Art still cool??
So above is some fan art or a concept if you will for Channel 5 that I posted on Instagram. I really like the content Andrew puts out and have been a fan for a while. I'm curious though as my network and respect as a freelancer grows does it get weirder to create "fake concepts". I feel like when I was starting out I did it all the time, but maybe now I could potentially work with clients I'm making fake stuff for. I'm curious y'alls thoughts on this subject. For the most part, I think just create what you want, but maybe we are making ourselves too accessible?? Would Kanye want you to create his album art after you posted a "Concept" collage and tagged him on Twitter?? Also Side note I recently designed a Japanese redesign of silk sonic, Whichh some TikTok kids weren't happy about lol. You can check out the video/post for that below.
What Drives You To Create?
I have been getting into a new podcast, It's called "Make Art Not Content" I like the title and the short digestible episodes are great so I recommend it. Shoutout Harry Vincent for putting me on.
One of the episodes got me asking myself these questions. What would you be making if the Instagram algorithm didn't influence your style? Do you even remember a time before social media? Did you just create work, finish it, and bask in its greatness? I personally can't remember, social media has taken over our lives, and I'm trying to get back to my roots. I'm trying to figure out what do I like designing for. I am challenging myself and encourage you to do the same, make something different. That thing may not be "on brand or fit into your IG grid or be curated. However, the best stuff usually isn't. The greatest art comes from thinking differently and straying from the everyday.
Scarcity Mindset
I just wrapped up a super fun and successful project. I should be stoked right? The pay was good and the client was awesome. However, I always go right back into worrying about how I'm gonna make money the next time. No matter how well I do or how many clients I get it seems impossible to get out of that mindset of fear. I have spoken to so many other freelancers on the podcast and I think that feeling may just be inevitable. Maybe that feeling is a good thing. That pressure to make rent or have extra money for the holidays may be what drives us to create every day.
