It's about the Journey
Hey Friends
How's it going, everybody? I hope you guys are all doing well. I've had a little bit of a weird week. Going in and out of being sick, so it's been kind of stressful to try to get into the momentum of things. One day I'm good and then the next day I'm feeling sick again.
Overall though, the week wasn't bad and I'm grateful for the days that I was feeling good. Hoping that I'll be back to 100% next week.
So Many Niches
So I recently dropped the different career Paths or Niches video over on YouTube, and I really wanted to say I appreciate all the love it's been doing super well and it's always nice to actually make a video that Isn't trying to please the algorithm or anything like that, and just something I wanted to do for the love of the game.
I made this video primarily to help you all out with stuff that I wish I knew when I was first starting design But then it also performed well, so that's super cool.
I just think that it's valuable to know all the different types of niches that are in design because when I was first starting out, it was hard for me to know which path to go down.
like if I should go into motion design, graphic design, web design etc. Throughout my journey as a designer, all the way from high school, starting with streetwear stuff to college, getting more into typography, logo design, branding, and then having a stint of being really into UI and UX.
I had to go through all those things and it's not that it was a waste of time, but I wish I would have had a little bit more focus from the beginning. That way I didn't have to kind of waste some of my time on the stuff I didn't end up wanting to do as my entire career. Like, I loved doing the UI UX stuff for a while, but I don't see myself doing that like for clients.
So I think my time would have been better put to use in some stuff like album art, poster design, art direction and things like that. What niches are y'all involved in?
I'm curious to hear what you want to do as a designer, if you're just getting started or what your career path has been like. Feel free to reply to this and let me know. Also if you don't know what I'm talking about with the video, you can check that out here.
They are just so ahead of their time and I think it paved the way for a lot of the ways album art lays out typography today, as well as the gradient map style duotone colors we see in countless modern album arts or poster designs.
Speaking of YouTube, It's been doing so well lately and I am so grateful for all the momentum, However, It's so weird how human brains are able to just get used to the situation they're in.
For example, I was so excited to get my first 1000 subscribers, It took me over a year of that grind and just going and going and people telling me: "you should be focusing on your client work or your personal design practice"
But I had like this radical kind of belief in myself, and now since the portfolio review videos and a few others have been kinda blowing up I've gotten like I think over 10,000 more subscribers just within the past few months, something crazy like that.
And that feeling isn't even as exciting as that first 100 or that first 1000. I think the human brain adapts to the situation. So you're not constantly, like feeling overwhelmed or stressed. But the bad thing about that is it seems like excitement and accomplishments have diminishing returns.
'm hoping that as I continue to grow as a designer, someone on YouTube and just overall as a human/creative and I hope that I can still practice gratitude and enjoy all the little wins. Because I realized at the end of the day There's no goal that's going to make me happy. Every time I complete a goal that I thought would bring me more happiness It isn't some life-changing event. The thing that should make you happy is the journey and focusing on the process along the way.
For example, I'm always ranting about wanting a mini truck, once I get that, yeah, it'll make me happy. But I need to be happy without that. And if I can't be happy without the things that I want then I probably won't be happy with em.
This can apply to anything from physical things that you want, accomplishments, fame, Something as superficial as clout online.
All this to say, just try to enjoy where you're at right now because everyone's on a different path and you probably won't be at this moment ever again.
Stuff I currently like and stuff I'm looking forward to!
