Graphic Design Is My Passion
Hey Friends
Hope you all are doing well this week. My week was full of meetings and just boring noncreative work if I'm being honest. Luckily I was able to squeeze in a few poster designs and a collab I have coming soon;)
Roaring 80's
I read this article here from AIGA about 80's type editorial design like the one pictured above. This style has completely made a comeback, it has finally leaked into the mainstream being used by brands big and small. I First started seeing its resurgence with designers like Jesiah, then John Mayer's soft rock campaign, and recently the brand Bodega has been quite fond of this style. Personally, I love the look and it brings people back to the more design-driven and tasteful days of shamelessly advertising. Shoutout to fonts Apple Garamond and Futura for absolutely carrying these designs. What do y'all think of this 80's editorial design??
Start Today
"Start Today" is not only one of my fav tracks by the Gorilla Biscuits but a mantra I like to live my life by. I am super close to 5000 subs on YouTube(I may even be there by the time you read this). The point though isn't to brag about that, it took me over a year to reach this milestone but I am very proud. It got me thinking about when I was right in the thick of quarantine in summer 2020 and thought about starting a YouTube channel. I had told people and got mixed responses. Now we are moving strong with some good momentum but there were some tough times. It's discouraging seeing others' growth skyrocket past yours but I always tried to keep the eye on my own prize and worry about the journey, not the destination. The point of this rambling is that if you want to do something just do it. Get started, put in the work, and everything else will follow. When I was sitting in my apartment in 2020 sweating with no Air Conditioning I never would have thought I would be doing YouTube this long, running a super fun podcast, and successfully working as a freelance designer for over 6 months. Live your life by the "Oh Wells" not the "What Ifs".
Wordle
This game really came out of nowhere and it was all thanks to its genius Twitter sharing feature. I'm sure you were like me a few weeks ago, you either have no idea what Wordle is or you have been seeing people post the little green and yellow emoji squares as tweets. This game is honestly so addicting and fun though. The feature of sharing on Twitter I think helped it catch on seemingly out of nowhere. You can check it out here. It is a good start to your day and gets your brain flowing. Reminds me of some kind of Gen Z equivalent to doing a daily crossword or sudoku puzzle.
Talk With A Legend
This week I got to podcast with the legendary Marc Mckee. You can check out the video here or linked down below. If you don't know who Marc Mckee is, You can check out his work here, but I'm sure you wore it or skated it as a kid. Marc Mckee is responsible for some of the most legendary skateboard graphics like the world industries devil man, flame boy, and wet willy. I am so grateful to be able to do this podcast and all the people it allows me to meet. Not only do I get to share it with y'all but I get to talk to some of the designers and artists I always looked up to. College Jesse would have lost his mind if I told him I have now podcasted with Aaron Draplin, Marc Mckee, and Blkmarket
